About Us

Imagine you were driving down a long dark road at night with the girl/guy of your dreams. You’ve always wanted this opportunity, to be this close to him/her and your chance has arrived. The rain is pouring down extremely hard and your entire concentration isn’t exactly placed on the road in front of you. As you were driving down the road, you saw someone frantically waving their hands, trying to catch a ride. This is your first decision, do you stop your car?

I wish I was a fish sometimes. Because being Nemo, means that at the very least your own kind, wouldn’t eat you up.

Sure there are the dangers of the sharks out there in the deep blue ocean, but at the least, you can trust your own kind.

How hard it is to be a human, and not being able to trust your fellow human being.

Gigantic Crabs!

No Commented January 17 2010
Categorized Under: Food Talks

My family and I have been into crabs ever since the visit to No Signboard. And we discovered that Giant Tampines actually imports these MEGA SIZED crabs every week. If my information is correct, a new batch comes in every Wednesday.

And these aren’t your typical crabs, these crabs are GIGANTIC! Like really huge!!

Its like the MEGA version of any burger you find in Macdonalds, like MEGA MCSPICY or MEGA BIG MAC. Its just MEGA!

Speak no further! Proof is as below!!

pc010550 Gigantic Crabs!

pc010557 Gigantic Crabs!

My dad’s palm as comparasion and my dad stands at 1.83m tall, so his fingers are long ok!! And the crab is GIGANTIC!

Look!! Mr crabby is like the width of one of my kitchen tiles!! BIG!!

giant pb270555 Gigantic Crabs!

pb270556 Gigantic Crabs!

Mr crabby also happens to have these huge gigantic claws that I love to sink my teeth into!! (:

From our experience, picking crabs is really important in order to determine if the meat you get is solid or soggy!

The crabs that are fiesty and continually want to ‘fight’ back are really great to eat!

Like if they keep pushing back at you when you push at their claws and also really hard shells are also a good indication.

Of course its also important that they are fresh and alive and not frothing at the mouth when you buy them.

If you’re in it for the meat, then buy male crabs! Female crabs have a tendency to be smaller and there is no guarantee that there will be crab roe aplenty for you after cooking them.

So the safest bet for the best crabs is hard fiesty male crabs! (:

Share your crab picking experience here! Or tips for choosing the best best besttttt crabs! (:

No Signboard Restaurant

Visited No Signboard Resturant recently after a long hiatus from visting any restaurants. It was kind of for a celebration for my mummy’s birthday. Kind of a celebration for me as well because our birthdays are really close together.

Anyhow, we went to the branch newly opened in Central Clarke Quay at around 3+ and it was completely isolated apart from another table.

So do visit that branch if you prefer a quieter atmosphere during the weekdays. The decor of the place was really nice, they had like chandeliars hanging over every table. It was a fusion of Chinese Asian decor and had also very westernised elements.

During Christmas, they had a Christmas tree filled with crab shells, which was really kind of cool and creative on their part! (:

We went for the Set Menu for 2 people, even though we had 3 people because the serving there is ridiculously huge.

Appetiser: Lobster Salad

The lobster salad was very well done. There were pieces of lobster in it with alot of like a special mayo sauce lathered on top together with several diced cubes of fruit. I believe there was honeydew inside. Not really sure what were the fruits.

And there was also peeled oranges at the side. The slight sourness of the oranges actually helped make the dish perfect because otherwise the mayo would have gotten really sickeningly sweet.

And of course, very nice decor by the chef.pc050566 No Signboard Restaurant

Braised Shark’s Fin with Crab Meat.

I don’t really know how you can criticise much about shark’s fin. It is what it is. Stewed for very long so the shark’s fin is extremely soft.

Tasty as per all sharks fin. Extremely generous with the shark’s fin, egg, crab meat. A little too thick for my liking, like they added abit too much cornstarch but these kinds of things vary from a day to day basis so its hard to tell.

pc050568 No Signboard Restaurant

Garlic Fried Broccolli

A very simple dish, just brocolli stir fried with garlic. Done very well, brocolli wasn’t over or under done.

It was a pleasant addition in the set menu to take of the heaviness of the lobster salad’s mayo sauce or the vinegar in the shark’s fin.

It sort of soothed your senses a little bit so it was a good addition and served at the right time.

Small Serving of Drunken Prawn (not included in the set menu but additionally ordered)

We decided to order our favourite dish from No signboard, apart from the infamous crabs, drunken prawn.

Though its not a chef recommendation, it has been our personal recommendation to anyone visiting the restuarant.

We were disappointed this time round though because the soup didn’t seem to have been boiled for hours allowing the herbs to soak in the water together with the prawns.

The soup didn’t have enough sweetness of the prawn, nor the bitterness of the herbs.

It was kind of like drinking a very very weak version of the first version we ever tasted.

So its not a dish I would recommend you order from this branch. At least not for now.

pc050571 No Signboard Restaurant

pc050572 No Signboard RestaurantThe highlight of the set menu and the real reason for our trip to No signboard.

WHITE PEPPER CRAB!!

Its one of the chefs recommendations and obviously I couldn’t wait to lay my hands on these fine tasting crabs.

The crab itself wasn’t a disappointment. The crab was extremely fresh (you could practically taste the freshness!), the meat was extremely solid, not lumpy like a crab that had died for a long time and they decided to cook it anyways.

It had alot of egg roe (MY FAVOURITE!!) and I ate the egg roe till I nearly died from all of it.

However, the white pepper sauce wasn’t to my expectations.

Maybe they did it to suit a more general popultion of Singapore which is why it wasn’t spicy enough.

But I personally didn’t think the sauce was tasty at all.

I felt like I was just eating the crab meat by itself because even dunking it in the sauce didn’t really help its cause.

Dessert: Mango Sago with fresh peeled Pomelo and Almond Beancurd with Longan

Not a big fan of the almond beancurd, so I decided to change one of the dessert to mango sago to suit my taste.

In the end I didn’t really like the dessert because I have an extremely sweet tooth and the dessert wasn’t sweet enough for me. The pomelo made it worse because it was sour. It took away even more of the sweetness of the dessert.

However they were extremely generous with the portion of mango cubes inside.

As for the almond beancurd, my daddy and mummy liked it so I think it was pretty ok.

I do think they should widen the selection of desserts because even though they specialise in seafood, desserts are often the ones that leave the last and most important impression. So yea, some work to be done on the desserts.

All in all, I think I’ll give the place 3/5.

It wasn’t nearly as good as the last time I visited No signboard but that was a different branch so it could be a contributing factor.

Its still a nice place to visit for the occasional craving of good food and relatively good ambience and also relatively good service.

However, if you’re looking for extremely good food that tantalises your tastebuds to the maximum then this may not be the perfect choice for you.

The view is very nice though.

pc050574 No Signboard Restaurant

The restuarant gave us a seat that overlooked clarke quay and the Singapore river so it wasn’t a bad view at all.

pc050581 No Signboard Restaurant

Mummy looking extremely happy waiting for the serving of delicious food.

pc050583 No Signboard Restaurant

And ending off with a picture of me showing that I desperately need to comb my hair and get a new dye job.

This colour has turned way too dull for comfort.

Adios. Hope you enjoyed my post. (:

High Quality Cakes for Low Prices

No Commented January 13 2010
Categorized Under: Food Talks

It was my brother’s birthday on the 11th of January. And my parents and I actually decided to check out a store that sells high quality cakes for lower prices as compared to you buying it from 4 seasons, Bengawan Solo etc.

It is claimed on their website that they sell their cakes to 5 star hotels, airlines and restaurants but at a price that is 30% cheaper as compared to places outside.

Heres the address and the name of the company:

Melvados (www.melvados.com)

26 Woodlands Terrace S738449.

When you drive in you see this huge signboard saying FoodEdge Gourmet, this is exactly where Melvados is located.

You walk in and you see this door to like a giant freezer and you just walk right in.

Inside you have a wide selection of cakes, brownies, bread, soups, sauces etc.

They have a wide variety of cakes, even ice cream cakes. Their flavours are widely varied, from cheesecakes to chocolate cakes to durian cakes for the typical singaporean durian lover!

You can check out exactly what they have from their website and if you’re interested in food sampling, you can visit them at the end of the month, about 28th of each month, usually Friday or Saturday where they have free food sampling.

Their order hotline: 6339-4953.

We decided to go for their Boston Cheese Cake which is 1kg and cost $28 which is very cheap considering it is a cheese cake.

p1100641 High Quality Cakes for Low Prices

The cake comes in a nice plain red box just like one where you would buy from any cake shop outside.

p1100643 High Quality Cakes for Low Prices

It looks relatively plain as compared to cakes outside. It doesn’t have any fanciful designs or large amounts of cream toppings etc.

But you can buy the cake and then decorate it yourself. Much cheaper that way.

p1100646 High Quality Cakes for Low Prices

Just pure cheese cake with a slight hard bread crumble base.

My verdict?

5/5

Just from carrying the cheesecake, you could tell they didn’t cheat on the ingredients. It was very heavy and cutting into the cake, you can feel the layers of good cheese being sliced away.

Extremely cheesy but what was great was the little base that took away some of the sweetness and didn’t make it so cheesy that it was unbearable.

Definitely the best cake you can find for any cheesecake lover.

I was throughly satisfied with every mouthful and didn’t get the least bored or sick of the taste.

Worth the money and worth the drive out to the factory area. (:

So check out Melvados if you’re looking for really great cakes today!
